How to Watch March Madness Without Cable

The NCAA tournament is split between two companies, which is why no single subscription covers all 67 men's games. But one half of the tournament is free over the air, and the other half costs less than a month of cable.

Here is the complete cord-cutter's setup for the men's and women's tournaments.

How the men's tournament splits

Four networks carry the men's bracket:

NetworkRoundsHow to stream it
CBSSelect First Round, Second Round, Sweet 16 and Elite Eight gamesFree with an antenna, or Paramount+ Premium
TBSGames in every roundHBO Max, Standard tier or above
TNTGames in every roundHBO Max, Standard tier or above
truTVFirst and Second Round gamesHBO Max, Standard tier or above

CBS and TBS alternate the Final Four and championship game. TBS carried the 2026 semifinals and title game from Indianapolis; the 2027 championship returns to CBS — which means the biggest game of the tournament will be free over an antenna next spring.

The women's tournament is an entirely separate arrangement, airing across ESPN and ABC.

The two-service solution

For full men's coverage without cable, you need something that carries CBS and something that carries the Turner networks.

What you needCostCovers
Antenna$20–$60 onceAll CBS games, free forever
Paramount+ Premium$13.99/monthCBS games if antenna reception is poor
HBO Max Standard$18.49/monthEvery TBS, TNT and truTV game
ESPN Unlimited$31.99/monthThe entire women's tournament

The cheapest complete men's setup is an antenna plus one month of HBO Max Standard — roughly $18 plus hardware. The tournament runs about three weeks, so a single month of HBO Max covers it end to end. Set a reminder to cancel afterwards if you do not want it year-round.

One important detail: HBO Max's ad-supported Basic plan at $10.99 does not include live sports. You need Standard ($18.49) or Premium ($22.99). Subscribing to the cheapest tier and discovering this on Selection Sunday is a common and avoidable mistake.

Note also that Paramount+ Essential ($8.99) does not carry the live local CBS stream — Premium at $13.99 does. If you can receive CBS over an antenna, that is both cheaper and higher quality.

Or one live TV package

If you would rather have everything in one app:

ServiceMonthlyCarries CBSCarries TNT/TBS/truTV
Sling TVFrom about $45.99NoYes (Orange and Blue)
Fubo Sports + News$64.99YesNo
YouTube TV$82.99YesYes
Fubo Pro$88.99 plus RSN feeYesNo
Hulu + Live TV$89.99YesYes
DirecTV Stream$84.99–$171.98YesYes

Fubo does not carry the Turner networks, which makes it the wrong choice for March Madness specifically despite its strong sports reputation. Sling carries TNT and TBS but not CBS — pair it with an antenna and it works well.

Several of these services offer free trials. Timing one to the opening weekend is a legitimate way to watch the busiest 48 hours of the tournament at no cost, provided you diarize the cancellation date.

The free routes

CBS over an antenna. Selection Sunday, a large share of early-round games, and the 2027 championship. An indoor antenna is $20 to $60 and also delivers NFL games, the Masters and the Olympics. Check a coverage map for your address first — reception depends on terrain and distance from the transmitter more than on antenna price.

March Madness Live. The NCAA's official app offers a limited free preview window before requiring a TV provider login. It is useful for catching the start of a game while you are away from home, not as a full solution.

Key dates

The men's tournament runs from Selection Sunday in mid-March through the championship game in early April — about three weeks in total. The women's tournament runs on a parallel schedule across ESPN and ABC.

Opening Thursday and Friday are the busiest streaming days of the American sports calendar outside the Super Bowl, with four games often running simultaneously.

Bandwidth and multiview

This is the one tournament where households genuinely watch several games at once.

UseRecommended throughput
One HD game10–15 Mbps
One 4K game25 Mbps or more
Multiview or two concurrent games50 Mbps or more

Opening-round Thursday afternoon is a heavy congestion window nationally. Wired Ethernet to your primary streaming device is the most effective single fix for stuttering, and worth doing the week before rather than during a buzzer-beater. If your internet plan has not been reviewed in a few years, comparing current fiber and fixed-wireless tiers for your address is generally a better investment than new hardware.

Which network has the 2027 championship game? CBS. The title game alternates between CBS and TBS; TBS had 2026.

Can I watch on Paramount+? CBS games, yes — but you need Paramount+ Premium at $13.99 for the live CBS stream, and Paramount+ does not carry the Turner networks' games.

Bottom line
